Genevieve hated winter. She couldn’t handle the cold like she used to (though, lately even the summer months left her at least a little chilled) and even if she could she didn’t have proper clothing or a warm place to seek shelter from the bad weather...at least the snow had stopped.

The cold was the hardest part of her situation to bear, and it was the only thing that didn’t get easier to handle as time went on. She had grown used to feeling the lyrium cravings in every waking moment, and she never felt hunger any more. She never felt it, all her thoughts revolved around food and fasting. Yesterday morning she found a burnt roll discarded in the garbage heap out behind the bakery. She meant to only eat half but lost control and devoured the whole thing. It felt like a moral failing, like a complete loss of control that still dragged down her conscious. Maybe if she could make it until the next morning it would be enough to atone for her most recent failure and lift her low mood.

Failure. One of many. She failed as a bard and as a Templar, and now failed at the discipline and self control in which she took so much pride. It was the only thing she had to take pride in.

Lyrium did a decent job of keeping those nasty thoughts away, but she was unable to find any today. Walking around the town was the next best thing, something she felt overwhelmingly compelled to do even though her feet felt like heavy stones and her head felt dizzy. She had a routine that she had to stick to: once: two loops around the tavern, to the tree in the center of town, around the tree five times, three times past the brothel and back to the tavern, counting her paces all the way. The few times she stopped to think about it, she was sure that every person she passed by must think she was out of her mind: a sickly looking beggar woman pacing in circles and counting to herself. For that reason, Genevieve tried very hard to avoid thinking about it and simply allowed herself to act on her compulsions.

Once around her circuit wasn’t enough to clear her head, and so she started over again. By now the sun was setting, and a few stray snow flurries fell from the sky again. Damn. She’d have to find a place to spent the night...and worse yet she lost count of her steps.

He had come to Orlais to bolster his ranks with some more desillusioned templars and coordinate some missions with the Venatori, but he already wanted to leave this city again once he set foot in it. It was the embodiment of orlesian. Everything was pretty and ornate and - silly. It almost made him miss the cold, hard stonewalls of the city of chains - almost.

Straightening his shoulders he pulled his cowl deeper against the blowing snow and stomped towards the tavern where he was supposed to meat the local leader of the Venatori. Had he been sceptic about Corypheus before, his doubts dwindled with every pasing day. The man was a capable leader and seemed to know what he was doing - and much more important: He was able to give him the power to get his revenge.

Other than most of his allies he did not join Corypheus because he wanted to end the mage rebellion once and for all. No. He wanted to get back at those at the top, the ones that enslaved both templars and mages. As he thought about it, the rage boiled up inside him, just as hot as on the day, Meredith had expelled him from the order and made his best friend tranquil. The song in his head seemed to agree, to fuel the flames of his hatred and let them burn brighter. Clenching his fists he turned a corner to find himself in the very gutter of Montsimmand - something that still looked a lot better than most Fereldan cities alienages, but already felt a lot more familiar.

Seeing some guards rounding the corner, he quickened his pace. He did not have the patience to deal with them right now. Taking a left into a narrow alleyway he was too focussed on the patrol behind him and bumped into someone - or something. It hadn't really felt like a person.

It was too light.

Turning to inspect this something, he - to his surprise - came to face with a woman about his height, but slender, almost fragile of statue. She clearly was no theat to him, not in this condition and he already wanted to ignore her and move on - when he saw the look in her eyes. They showed the same desperation he had felt back in Kirkwall, when he had had nothing. Those were the eyes of an addict, but also of someone who had lost everything.

Reluctantly he took off one of his gloves and offered the woman a hand. That stare had moved something inside him. Something he had long thought lost to him.

Much to her frustration, Genevieve had to give up on trying to remember where she had left off counting and start all over. One. Two. Three. Five...No, four...five again. Six...no, that was seven because she skipped four. She missed a few more trying to remember her place, and was she just starting or just finishing her second loop around the tavern? Damn...her mind was a mess.

She didn’t see the man who passed her, didn’t notice him at all until he ran into her. It wasn’t a particularly hard collision, but Genevieve was weak and unsteady enough that she stumbled. Her heart began to race, yet each frantic beat felt so soft and faint, almost desperate. Maker, is this what would finally do her in, bumping into someone?

Genevieve took his hand to steady herself, sure that if she had not she would have collapsed on the ground. The warmth from his skin was surprising, and it made her all the more aware of just how deeply the ice and cold cut into her bones. It was a wonder that she hadn’t yet lost any fingers or toes to frostbite. Just as surprising was the act itself. Was this kindness? It had been a long while since Genevieve knew kindness. She took a few deep breaths to calm herself before she spoke.

”Thank you, Monsieur,” she said in a soft voice. She had no energy to try to sound pleasant or to force herself to smile. ”I’m sorry, I wasn’t looking where I was going.”

The hand with which the women reached out was cold, icy against his now bare skin. She must have been in the cold for hours. After she had steadied herself the stranger took his time, taking deep breaths as if to calm herself. He waited paitently. This woman had gained his interest and besides - the Venatori could wait a few moments longer.

When the other finally spoke, her voice was soft and tender. It seemed like she was just as ill as her appearance suggested. Nonetheless she had manners and good ones at that. He would certainly not apologize to someone that had bumped into him.

"Actually" He said, trying to look the woman before him in the eye. "That just now was my fault." Now noticing the bite of the cold, he put his glove back on and continued: "I..." He trailed off. How should he proceed? After all he couldn't just question her out on the street. "Would you like to join me in the tavern? You seem like you could use a drink." He eyed her up and down. "Make that two" He laughed dryly. "Don't worry, I'm buying."

Panic gripped her, and her heart fluttered again. This should have been an easy choice: she was cold and starving and a kind stranger offered to give her the warmth and shelter she so desperately needed. Genevieve could picture it so vividly: a cozy spot by the fire, a pint of heart ale, and a hot meal. Somewhere beneath all of the twisted, tangled urges that was all she really wanted, and yet she couldn’t accept such kindness. She didn’t deserve it, certainly not when she hadn’t walked nearly enough to satisfy her compulsive urges to stay on the move and not when she was just getting back on track with her fasting.

Genevieve was ready to refuse, but she hesitated, feeling an unexpected moment of clarity...Sweet, Maker, she really was out of her mind, wasn’t she? Was this what the Knight-Commander saw when he turned her out? Probably, and at that time she hadn’t yet dug herself in so deep.

”Thank you, I would be glad to join you.” There it was: an answer she had a feeling she would come to regret. Her panic did not subside, but grew. ”But just to get out of the cold. I don’t drink.” Alcohol she found even more morally abhorrent than food: all indulgence with little nourishment. Years ago, however, she rather enjoyed fine wines. Maybe that had to do with why she failed as a bard, maybe if she had been dead sover she could have done a better job keeping her wits about her. It wasn’t a mistake she was willing to repeat. @Raleigh Samson

The younger woman seemed to hesitate, but only for a moment then she shyly agreed to come along, even if only to warm herself up. He admired her restraint. As hungry and cold as she appeared she seemed to still have her pride. When she told him, she didn't drink he saw something in her expression change. She was not here, not really.

Attempting to bring her back to the present, he lay an arm around her shoulders and pulled her with him towards the establishment. That didn't really leave her a choice, other than to struggle against his grip or to give up and come along, but then again: They would get nowhere if they just stood out on the street. What he didn't notice was, that when he had lifted his arm, he had also briefly revealed the templar sign ornating his bracers.

OOC: Yes, it's really short, but I hate not giving others time to react ^^'

Genevieve allowed the man to put his arm around her. At first, she shank away from his touch and became tense, but only a moment later she relaxed and settled down. The rational thoughts she so often ignored were getting louder: getting out of the cold was exactly what she needed, she might not have another chance tonight, and if she had to spent the night outdoors she would be in very real and immediate danger. The risk wasn’t worth carrying on with her rituals and compulsions, no matter how much they promised to clear her mind and ease her conscious.

Just listening to her rational, sane thoughts once was an all important victory that put her at ease about the whole situation. She was making the right choice after all, maybe she could dare to have something to eat (drinking was still not an option), and the panic she felt moment ago was already fading away.

...Until she caught a glimpse of the Templar sigil on his armor. Genevieve froze: spine rigid, feet planted firmly into the ground even as he tried to lead on. Her eyes grew wide in shock, staring at the symbol before she slowly turned to look the man in the eye again.

”You’re a Templar?” she asked softly. This didn’t make sense. Why would a Templar show kindness to someone like her? Probably because he knew nothing about her and only saw a starving, freezing woman. Surely he wouldn’t be so kind if he knew more about her past and her fall from grace. @Raleigh Samson

At first the woman seemed to give into his guidance, but then she suddenly stiffened, revealing a surprising amount of force for such a fragile being. Surprised by the seemingly random change in demeanor, he turned his gaze to investigate the cause - finding himself uncomfortably close to his opposites face. Her eyes were wide and her whole expression screamed at him in full terror.

Instinctively, he let go of the woman and took a step back to create some distance between them. Now just staring at her, he had no clue what to do. What had shaken her that much?

Softly, probably still terrified, she asked him, if he was a templar. He didn't understand. Was that all, that was bothering her? Shrugging he brushed back the fabric and revealed the templar crest that decorated both of his bracers. Even if he and his allies weren't on good terms with the chantry - which was an understatement - he wasn't one to throw away perfectly good armour, at least not before Maddox finished crafting his new set.

"I was once, in another life." He revealed, a certain sorrow finding it's way into his voice unbiddenly.

Her eyes were still fixed on the Templar sigil on his armor, but some of her fear subsided and the tension in her muscles eased as she tried to convince herself that this man was not a threat, that perhaps he showed kindness out of genuine concern and had no ulterior motive. Such things were rare in Orlais, but this man was not Orlesian.

”As was I,” she answered softly. She managed to look the man in the eye again, but only briefly before she could bear it no longer and had to look away. ”I didn’t leave the Order on good terms.” An intentionally vague answer and an understatement if ever she made one, and yet admitting even that small fragment to her story made Genevieve feel so small and vulnerable, as though she had been stripped naked and ripped open. Her problems seemed so much simpler to manage when when she tried to ignore them. Her past couldn’t haunt her if she could find a way to forget.

Genevieve shook her head and sighed. ”I won’t be offended if you have a hard time believing me, but there was a time when I was strong and healthy.” It wasn’t even that long ago, but it felt like centuries had gone by. Her decline came on quickly, and time dragged on at a slow crawl out on the cold streets.

Still hesitant the woman before him admitted what he had already suspected since he had seen her eyes for the first time and now, that she managed to hold his gaze, if only for a moment, he knew for certain that this woman had more in common with him than he would like to admit. As if to cement that thought, the former templar revealed another simiilarity of their elegies and even though she formulated it vaguely, he could make out the pain in her voice.

All that only served to make the woman more intriguing to him, even more so now that he saw a chance to recruit her into his ranks. They could use her, if her anger could be directed at someone other than herself that was.

"I don't think, any of us did." He answered and this time he managed to keep his voice clean of his conflicting emotions. It was true, that he still wasn't over what had happened, but wallowing in it would not help him to get, what he wanted so desperately. "I guess, what I'm trying to say is: You're not alone."

When the younger woman shook her head, assuring him, that she had once been different, he believed her immediately. He had come to know first hand, what Lyrium or it's withdrawal for that matter could do to a person. There was no doubt he had looked just as miserable, if not worse than his opposite once the Mage-Templar war had started. Lyrium was scarce nowadays; so scarce in fact, that even his templar friends, that had helped him get his hands on a dose now and then, needed every vial themselves.

It was then, that the red song had crept into his head, that his mind had been poisoned with a thirst even harder to quench than his desire for the calm river the blue stuff was compared to it. He could hear it's hard, rythmic sound even now, the desire drumming away in the back of his head. But it was all worth it. He was stronger than before - his men were stronger than ever. Sure, there was a price to pay, but at least they were free from their leash. Oh. Are you really? What about Corypheus hold on you? Quickly he silenced the voice in his head. It was probably only the paranoia that accompanied either lyrium's consumption. One learnt to deal with it one way or another.

On the spur of the moment, he reached into one of the pouches on his belt and pulled out a vial of liquid blood. It's song grew louder as soon as his leather-clad fingers touched the container that was laced with an an intricate design - another parting gift from the templar order. "I believe you." He said, his face now stern. "And you can be again." With that he slowly exended his hand, offering the vial to an involuntary abstainer.

Any lingering fears soon faded. If he left the Templar order on bad terms, then she had nothing to fear, at least not because of his associations. It did not, however, explain why he still wore armor that bore the Templar emblem. Genevieve allowed that question to remain unanswered, for she was too exhausted to use the energy to speculate, and something even more intriguing caught her attention and nearly made her forget about the other questions that circled in her mind..

Now her gaze was squarely focused on the vial in his hand. ”Is that...Lyrium?” She outstretched her hand, but stopped half way before she froze. ”It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before.” During her time as a Templar, Genevieve had seen plenty of Lyrium, and it was all more or less the same blue substance, and this was completely different. For one, it was red: blood red, violently red, and she could swear she heard it singing softly, but withdrawals and starvation had been unkind to her sanity. Still, she recognized it as Lyrium, there was enough familiar about it.

She didn’t want to look away from the vial of strange Lyrium, but she forced herself to look the man in the eye again, now able to hold his gaze for more than a fleeting moment. ”Why are you doing this for me?” Was it still just kindness and generosity?
