Red Lyrium Bear

TBC, 9:41

Wherever it went, it left a trail of bodies in its wake. A path of blood and gore that would have made any seasoned warrior blanch. It didn't eat what it killed. It was't hungry. All it knew was anger and pain as the red lyrium growing out of its body drove it mad. Sharp spikes of glowing red crystal protruded from its skin, leaving rivulets of blood to matt its dark fur.

It didn't know where it was going, it only knew that its paws kept moving, one after the other. Its form was slow and lumbering, its breaths shallow as the lyrium in its body took over. It only stopped when a sound drew its attention, a snapping of twigs, and it swung its heavy head to look directly at you.

The was a moment of calm before its large body started to move. Its slow lumbering turn to long strides, and suddenly it was coming straight at you, bellowing, jaws wide open as it lunged for you.

What will you do?

Far and few of the familiar had been seen since a departure from Kirkwall, only the mangled tones that lay strewn across the sparse papers sent by those he had grown closer to in past travels. Most word from Varric over the goings on of the others that they had come to know, yet how he gained such information was always beyond the elven man’s knowledge. Always vague about those so called connections but it had proven helpful so the dwarf was never questioned further. Let him keep to his secrecy as so many did.

Hints of well-being and misfortune spoken of in those letters yet for some I could only hope for harsher forms of punishment than any described, at least from what could be made out. For even still he found such things hard to look at. Those scrawled phrases difficult to make sense of no matter how one practiced. It was yet another thing to remind the elf of what he could not fully do. The manner of learning missed out on in his youth. With more recent offers pushed away even as he longed to accept them from beings once known.

These short comings were his to deal with, another accomplishment to bestow upon himself. And in time perhaps it would come to be. Though for now parchment crumbles between the clawed armor upon his hands in frustration. Only to be shoved away into the pouched which litter his belt, he would look at it again later if only to attempt to make sense of it all. A longing to know of at least the fates of a few. Air blew harshly from between lips as bare feet trudged over the lands in mindless wander. Goals left unreachable just yet as new worries found reason to plague the mind.

What could be done alone that had not already happened? Perhaps it was best if he simply looked forward no matter how thoughts threatened to linger on memories unwanted, those already past. Some undeserving the more they were thought of. Those rivalries and friendships made. Yet such reflections upon the past are quickly driven from mind as the scent of decay and blood work to assault his senses. A grimace crossing over already cynical features as a gaze darts to the path littered in corpses. Some shredded and torn though still holding on to their pieces. None of them truly missing no matter how detached.

It is in caution that hands reach for the hilt of the blade. Drawing it before himself as attentions looked out toward the path now set after. The gentle thump of feet chasing after the increasingly steady rumbles of the beast which no doubt lay ahead. And as it came into the view the body was not one foreign to the elf and neither where the glimmering crystals sprouting from its very hide, though they had not been seen in a long while. A sudden spark of fear rising to grip him then as eyes lay upon the creature infected by the tainted lyrium.

This curse had spread beyond the walls of Kirkwall now. Plaguing the living with its touch and allowed such a substance to grow above ground. And if it had spread to the wildlife what was to stop it from spreading to what already coursed so thoroughly through his own veins. It is in worry that a mind whispered out for him to get away from the beast while another urged action on. Unnerving as it was to possibly risk such corruptions this was a creature that needed to be dealt with for more than his own safety.

An action of the plagued only locking in the course taken. Those wild eyes falling upon the lightly armored elf as it began its onslaught of aggressions, ‘So be it.’ Wary of using his own benefits against the tainted it is by body alone that a form darts from the path of the beast in hopes to avoid the crunching fangs that reached out. A blade swinging out in that same beat an efforts to cut away the flesh of one already so maimed. Wishing to enact even a portion of mercy to the being with such poisons flowing through it.

As it raced towards its target all its primitive mind could think of was the pain and the rage. Why wouldn't the pain stop? Why did its limbs ache and its flesh burn? What was the noise that kept singing in its ears?

For a moment it remembered a simpler time. It remembered hunting by the river and cubs ambling alongside. There had been warm nights in the cave, the comforting smell of fur and musk. Where had it all gone wrong? It had felt something growing inside it, something writhing and wriggling under its skin. It hadn't been painful at first, just a mild discomfort. But then whatever had been inside had grown and grown until the discomfort turned to pain, and suddenly things weren't right any more, and it didn't understand why.

And it was dealing in the only way it knew how - to lash out, to kill.

It didn't slow as it barrelled towards the elf, its jaw open wide, ready to snap. Too quick, the slight man twirled out of its way and brought his sword down hard against its side. The blade sliced against the skin but hit hard lyrium on the way down, making the bear roar in pain and stumble back from the force of the hit. A surface wound, cruelly saved by the thing that was slowly killing it.

The hulking creature paused only to collect itself, and then it tried to strike again. As it lunged forward, this time it tried to take a swipe with its paw, It arced in a wide sweep, strong shoulders pushing it forward in an attempt to reach.

As blade lashes out against the beast it is met with a reverberating ping as the force of contact to that erupting plague comes back to shake through his arms. That accursed ores saving the beast from what could have been a more devastating blow yet now it was left with but another crack against the surface of that hide. Rivulets of blood splattering in signal that at one point an aim had held truth. Though now all it seemed to have done is nothing more than further enrage a creature already so consumed by violence.

That hulking frame finding reason to pause for but a moment as those heavy limbs readjusted themselves against the earth. Piercing eyes of the beast never seeming to stray far from its proclaimed target though in truth his own gaze did not falter either, locked upon the tainted creature. All in hopes to find an opening against it that the exposed lyrium would not simply swat away. But it is then that eyes threaten to linger too long as movement finally takes hold and seizes the mind of the corrupted.

Yet it is not another charge which finds it. That figure lurching forward as powerful muscles rolled beneath that broken coat. And perhaps it was this he was not truly ready for. For no matter how one may think to call upon the lyrium which flowed through his own veins and allow the swipe to phase, it could not be brought forth in time. Even should it take hold before an impact would it be worth the risk that such passing contacts would infect.

Give that tainted ore yet another host to claim by allowing the beast’s corruption to taste the very essence of a different inflicted disease? No, he could not see it. So instead a hand releases hold upon a blade and pulls close to his body in efforts to deflect even a portion of that slicing blow. Hope held those claws would connect with plated metal rather than tearing so smoothly into leather and flesh.

Though there would be no evading the damages of attempting to withstand the strength of such a strike. Vain hope that it action would work and while arm is held secure a majority of those curving nails do not catch against the protective metals as they slice cleanly into the exposed skin of the arm and press into his side beneath that hardened leather.

Grimace sets over those features as blood leaks to the surface. Yet it does not halt his next action as arm is forced to move despite what threatens to tear further. Rivulets falling in steady paces as armored talons reach out, bypassing the hilt of the blade as force is placed behind his movements. Fingers curling in attempts to sink into the eye nearest to him and gouge it from the corrupted one’s face.

Kill. Kill. Kill. That was all its primitive mind was telling it to do. It consumed the beast, the song echoing within and around and driving it insane.

But this? This at least was a distraction. The pain, despite making it more angry than it ever remember being in its life, was a reprieve from from the torment the red lyrium was inflicting upon it. Every movement it could feel its bones grinding together again the cursed crystal. In the end, it didn't care what happened. Either it would kill this elf and go to find something else to take its mind off its suffering, or the elf would kill it, ending its suffering completely.

Of course, the beast wasn't quite intelligent enough to think to let itself be killed. No. It still raged and it still fought for its life, even if it was dying.

Claws screeched across armor plates and softer leather, and for a moment it felt satisfaction as the scent of the elf's blood bloomed against the chill of the air. Unfortunately, before it had time to launch its next attack, long, clawed fingers gauged its face, sinking into the soft meat of its eye in an excruciating attack!

The bear flinched back and roared in pain, shaking its head from side to side as blood poured from its wounded face. In a fit of rage and pain it suddenly launched itself forward, mouth wide, eyes still closed in pain, and it clamped it teeth around the closest thing it could find.

It was not going to let go easily.

The soft give of flesh is felt within the next instant as that ridged armor sinks beyond those capping claws, piercing as deeply as was allowed by the creature’s very features. Bloodied warmth seeping against those intruding digits as they glided with a practiced ease through the eye of the beast. False talons giving the orb reason to burst beneath such pressures and fill the cavity with something more. Yet even as those seeking fingers curl in hopes to find further hold within the corrupted one, the beast wrenches back.

Forcing weaponry to withdraw from its skull and bring with it a tattered mix of flesh and blood as it splattered to the open air, clinging to those once digging claws as it ran against the bare palm beneath them. And while the infected held little visual of him now, such action did not come without a moment’s regret as the massive beast swiftly swings its head and fangs return with their own seeking vengeance. Powerful jaws snapping in blind aggression before arm can fully pull from its reach.

The scrapping of stained ivories against metal and the audible crunch which resounded through the terrain brought a pained hiss through the elf’s teeth. Those curving fangs striking against the plating which adorned him as others glanced away to pierce the bare flesh just above it. Sinking smoothly into the unprotected in far easier motion as maw is given pause only by the hold the rest of it bore. Fangs splintering the metals to mar what lay beneath it, though it is in the sustained grip alone which gave the elf further cause to worry.

Unrelenting pressure is felt between those crushing jaws as heated breath blew against the now captivate appendage. Blood flowing from all which pierces him now and giving the bear but a taste of what armor worked so hard to endure. Though all the while that bloodied arm remains within the clutches of the tainted beast the one still free shifts to hold tightly to the blade. In the movement that could be mustered, sword is drawn back before shoving forward in an attempt to sink into the base of the creature’s neck. Angled up in an effort to pierce through without being stopped by the searing lyrium that broke apart the beast’s hide.

There was no mercy shown as the elf gouged out its eye, fingers curling until they met bone, tearing out flesh and sinew until there was nothing left but a gaping hole. The trees around them echoed with the bear's wail of pain, a high, keening noise that was spine-chilling in its misery.

Despite the elf's efforts to hang on, clawed fingers digging deep, deep into the flesh of its face, the bear managed to wrench itself free. When it lashed out it was not with precision; one eye was gone and the other was clenched tightly shut, but somehow its massive jaws managed to grasp onto something. As its teeth dug in it could taste metal. Blood and armour mixed together on its tongue until it wasn't sure if it was biting flesh or not. Between a mouthful of arm the bear was still making this high pitched moaning noise, and with the pain it slowly started to bite harder and harder. It felt something crunch between its teeth but it didn't stop. Harder and harder it clamped down its jaws.

Of course it didn't see the blade coming. With its eyes squeezed tightly shut all it was thinking about was sinking its teeth deeper and deeper. Only did it open its jaw when it felt the blade slice easily through its flesh, and it stumbled back and away from the sharpened point.

It swayed on it four paws for a moment, blood trickling from its neck and pooling in its mouth. With a great effort it stood on its hind legs, swaying unsteadily, before launching one final attack. With a great groan it flung its whole body towards the elf, paws and claws outstretched and mouth wide.

It didn't care if it missed. It knew this was to be its end.

The infected one’s cries were near deafening as they sounded out against all which lay trapped betwixt those jaws. Breathy groan vibrating out against the warrior’s entrapped features as armor and blood mixed upon the beast’s tongue. Scrapping metal doing nothing to stop the force at which the creature bore down upon him. One driven on by the maddening song which reverberating against the air from the plague which broke apart the other’s flesh, singing its own tunes that no doubt echoed through the bear’s veins. And the proximity it held now was unnerving.

Radiating heat felt from both the hide of the bear and the pulsing crystals that crackled with a life of their own daring to venture so near with their corruption. This was not something that could stay, this thing needed to be removed less he wish to lose the very arm it clung to so tightly or contract the poison that tainted it. Neither option truly appealing, though in the way ivories held it may come to such things. Wicked fangs piercing and insistent on snapping through what stopped their closure. So easily did it crack and break the structure of both armor and limb.

Luck allowing a blade to rise within that free arm and slide smoothly through the flesh of the tainted beast. Severing vessels along its throat yet it can move no further before the creature pulls away. Blind reason found to rip teeth from the captivated limb and granting release from those ever present pressures. The chance taken quickly by the marked elf to stumble back from the beast. His own breath falling in ragged bursts as eyes dared flicker toward the limb which once lay within those jaws. Marred and twisted beneath the armor and where fangs had struck.

Yet it is a mix of sensations that he cannot allow a mind to linger upon for long as attentions are forced to return toward the beast which stood on shaking paws. Balance lost as it swayed unsteadily no matter how it braced against the earth. Mixed blood pooling and dripping in steady rivulets from stained jaws, but still it came for him again. A great effort taken to rise up in such towering displays as claws and terrible fangs reached out in hopes to rake against the elf once more. Though it was a satisfaction he hoped not to give.

A figure pulling from the path of the collapsing creature as the uninjured hand grasped tightly to his blade. His own balance threatened as the weight of the plagued beast fell to the ground, a staggering step to catch himself before aim is set against the downed being if only to end this suffering more quickly. Sword seeking the bear’s neck once more though this time it comes from above hoping to pierce through that thick hide just as before. Remain an act unstopped by the tainted lyrium which sung out in hauntingly familiar refrains.

As the blood pooled in its mouth and dribbled down its chin, it could hear the sweet melody of the tainted song growing fainter. Even as the blade had stuck into its neck and it swayed where it tottered on its hind legs, all it could feel was a dull ache. Its wounds ached, the crystals embedded in its skin ached, but as the beast came crashing down with all its weighed even the aches started to fade. It barely even noticed as the warriors made one final effort to end its life, his sword swinging down once again on its thick neck from above. But that was okay. It was better this way.

The lyrium-tainted bear gave one final gurgle as liquid pooled in its throat, and where it had thrown itself to the ground it did not get up again.

Fin.

The dull thump of a blade striking against the thick flesh of another ran through the warrior’s arm the moment it connected. No sounding clang of the piercing crystal breaking the movement this time around, allowing the sword to slice cleaning into the meat of the creature’s neck. Focus holding upon the way the tainted beast still stirred no matter how subtle a movement or rise of its struggling voice. Those gargled gasps of air strangled by the liquid which pooled between those bloodied jaws. Though he could not allow for attentions to drift from this tainted being until it was gone and with luck such a time would come to pass quickly.

For now the haunting song of the lyrium cried out far louder than bear itself. Its host as fading fast from this world and a piece of the elf could only hope that the plagued crystal would die with it. And yet he held on to doubt as the dwarf’s words echoed softly in the back of his mind. Such a thing would need to be taken care of just as the maddened creature had been. Though how one might be rid of deposits held within another’s hide was a mystery to the ghost, other than doing away with the body completely. A task he was in no condition to take care of himself nor was the marked one sure he had the means to do it.

Though focus on much else is unable to be grasped for long as a mind cried out to get away. Do not remain near to the creature or its plagued spires for longer than necessary, no matter the worries of that infection spreading. Nothing could be done by his own hand for now. And that was something he had to accept. Shaken breath falling from the elven man’s lips as a sword finally drew back against the fallen creature’s hide once the rise and fall of its body had grown still. Unsteady steps carrying him away but a few paces as pale gaze locked momentarily upon the way the lyrium seemed to pulse within the beast. Those crystalline veins stretching through that infected flesh as blood oozed from the new paths carved through a broken body.

Yet attentions do not remain as a gaze flickers frantically about in watch for further dangers, anything that may have been drawn to the noise whether it end up being friend or foe. A sword held firmly in had as focus drifted to wipe the tainted blood from the blade before it was secured upon him once more. Thought even with a weapon sheathed a heart did not find reason to calm as it continued to hammer in his chest. Adrenaline slowly winding down and with it came the crashing force of all that lay inflicted. An unsteadiness felt to seize him as new surges of pain flared from the wounds which gouged over that figure.

Armored talons desperately shifting as they sought out the blood soaked fabrics. Those frayed edges ran beneath his fingers, ghosting touch lighting upon the clawing which lay underneath it only to draw a pained hiss to rush between his teeth. A hand quickly pulling away as the other arm shifted to hug closely to his body in nearly the same moment. If there was another out here they would need to deal with the lyrium should they have the strength, if not then he would simply return when it did not feel as if his own light was waning. Free hand shifted to hover over a smaller knife as paces retreated from where the creature lay. A vain sense of hope holding that even if another was not around the he alone could at least stop a body from bleeding out.
