Naturally, there were things Zanthe didn’t know. For example, Somniari’s training! She had no inclination on what the young woman went through, all she knew was she harbored a great and heavy weight. That’s all the demon really needed, now wasn’t it? This band of riffraff, this Inquisition had a rather impressive collection. Templars and mages forced to work so closely together, scholars and warriors sharing bunks… And while Zanthe absolutely knew that the Inquisition accepted apostates, she knew just as many Circle mages found their way into the ranks of the peace restoring order.

To be rather honest, she was surprised to hear that Somniari was trained in a Circle and outside of it. She tilted her head to the side hearing it. “Is it true they are rather… Um, hateful of certain magic types? I’m a shapeshifter and I’ve gotten some very odd looks from Templars when they see my magic.” Of course, there were rumors of what was forbidden and what was not. Rumors could hardly define anything though! She had no doubt that blood magic was forbidden—these people were unspeakably boring—but what others had been forbidden to be practiced? As far as Zanthe knew, the art of shifting was viewed as a wild magic.

Clearly some at least looked down upon the strange magic. Not just Templars either, even mages gave her sharp glares or disgusted noises. People were so judgmental. Meals shouldn’t be allowed to speak disapprovingly of her abilities. Or of anybody superior! A shame, really, that they couldn’t appreciate a higher status and ability. Though, could she be surprised? They started wars over something as moronic and simple as religion! And they did that seemingly regularly too. Mortals, she thought bitterly and with disgust.

“Not fond of the Circle, huh?” The ginger asked with a look of compassion across her features. Demons were cut down in Circles, stealing the bodies of Harrowing mages only to be cut down before they could enjoy Thedas and all it’s virtues! Zanthe personally wasn’t fond of the prisons either.

Somniari's brow furrowed at the mention of Zanthe being a shapeshifter. It was a peculiar thing to hear, as she was fairly sure that was a form of magic. Thus far, she had presumed the woman fought in whatever means were common for a soldier. Perhaps she was an archer or favored some type of blade. As far as she understood, most of the mages within the Inquisition had once been part of a Circle. Of course, not all of them were part of the mage rebellion. However, if she was a lieutenant then surely she was part of Commander Cullen's forces.

How...peculiar. She felt like she was missing something, something important. It was a bit frustrating, considering that it was clear that the Spirit had known something. However, here she was lacking in information.

"That depends upon the Circle." Or, at least that was how she understood it. She had heard and even had the occasional mage tell her about how their Circle had been a fine place to live as long as one didn't cause trouble. However, she was more than aware this was not true for all Circles. "But the Circles were generally more cautious to less common magic, the sort that could get one marked as a hedge mage." An obscure term really, but it did not matter much in her own mind.

Something had changed in the redhead's tone, as the compassion she offered Somniari sounded distinctly different to the pale mage. She could hardly know that it was because it was, in its own twisted way, fairly genuine. "No," she said shortly, plucking a tome from the shelf, "But nobody quite liked Kirkwall, I imagine."

How often in her years of being free from the Veil had she met a Shapeshifter? Perhaps only a few mages in over a hundred. They were exactly what Somniari said. Hedge mages! The very same mage they labeled a wolf who ran about in the clothing of a sheep. Perhaps they were all morons, believing power and knowledge made someone a ‘hedge mage’ and not something more. Clearly that rather skewed thought process made for the powerful to hide much easier. Hedge mages, ha!

Circles were prime places for demons to lurk and feed. So many saddened mages, frustrated or full of desire. How could her people not be attracted there? The stone prisons of mages were little more than lures for demons. A demon could possess a mage only to be cut down by the men in armor. It happened more than once, unfortunately, and Zanthe could never fall for something so simple. Now, if she’d been summoned it’d have been a different story. That’s how she ended up beyond the Veil in the first place. Scared little mages wanting to bind a demon, wanting safety. And boy, did that come back to bite them square in the arse.

“I think Kirkwall isn’t a shining example of Circles.” However, it was a perfect example of what could go wrong. Extremists could ruin things for people, the average person. Not to mention the demons who wanted to take control of a mage! Zanthe could recall the tales of demons being slaughtered almost as soon as they were in their new hosts. Templars and the Champion, a real fucking team…

Somniari had taken a tome from a shelf. She didn’t put out her hands to accept the tome but rather she was prepared to if it were offered. Etiquette was still somewhat lost to Zanthe. With Somniari distracted with tomes and talk—though she didn’t seem as distracted as the redheaded woman would like—she properly began to pull bits of despair from the librarian. Scholars were starting to make their way to the library as well, adding more bodies and people to either feed on or use as a cover. Somniari may never know it was the Lieutenant enjoying and removing her despair, the demon that she was.

Somniari had been told to be careful and she truly wanted to. However, she found herself unable to know what she was supposed to be careful of. Nothing seemed entirely off, aside from how odd the Lieutenant seemed to be. However, oddness was no reason to spit in the face of someone and it was not as if it was a prominent thing in the redheaded woman. It was just a few things here and there.

She supposed that the supposed lack of danger should have made her more comfortable, but it did quite the opposite. She found herself unable to truly relax even with the conversation that went on. In fact, it seemed to only slowly come with silence, coming by as if a bit of stress had been chipped at. It had her wondering if the Spirit had been paranoid. Could Spirits be paranoid? She was not entirely sure. As a Spirit Healer, she interacted with a fair amount but she couldn't recall any being paranoid...except maybe a Spirit of Justice, though she was not sure if their exuberance counted as paranoia or an eternal thirst to solve all of the injustices of the world.

It was probably the latter, as tiresome as it sounded.

Her brow furrowed. "That is what some of the others say," she said, "I hear some of the ones in Orlais were nice." Or, she could only presume that was true consider how Lady Vivienne went on about it all to those she bothered to entertain. The woman made Somniari's skin prickle and she found that she couldn't stand listening to her very long, even if she stood from a distance. She had the tongue of a monster, a fairly ignorant one, disguised as something pretty.

Finally finding the second tome, she tucked them under an arm before she began searching for the last one she needed.

The Lieutenant had no way of knowing a spirit had warned Somniari. A proper warning, of course, considering who Zanthe really was. Very few of the living knew what she was for obvious reasons! She knew better than to feast quickly, something she learned quickly. That roused suspicions. And suspicions were not a good thing when you were a demon surrounded by Templars, ex-Templars and otherwise.

Her meal mentioned the Orlesian Circles. Her eyes instinctively rolled with disgust. Those Circles were… Shit, crazy! There was a reason Orlais attracted a variety of desire demons. Their Circles were a very large attractor of desire, despair, and rage. Orlais could be considered a very divine feeding ground. However, Zanthe had come to enjoy the tastes of Tevinter and Skyhold residents. Somniari was currently her favorite!

So much her favorite that Zanthe fed on her even now. “Everything about Orlais is supposedly superior.” She made herself sound rather bitter. In reality, Zanthe loved Orlais! It was full of people that demons could prey on quite easily. And wasn’t that a demon paradise? She’d never met Vivienne or perhaps that opinion might change. Somniari grabbed a second tome before moving on again. Shit, how many of these damned things had she accidentally saddled herself with?!

Of course, she’d need to actually read them too. She needed to maintain over. Ugh… Damn her. “I think Rivain is the only place with decent Circles.” Seers were a marvel! Zanthe had always wanted to meet one outside of the Veil. She could observe them all she wanted from ‘safety’ but she wanted to meet one first hand. “I don’t know anything about Antivan Circles but I imagine they aren’t the best.” Antiva had the Crowes, need she say more?

The bitter tone was easy to catch. Somniari lacked enough knowledge about the other woman to consider it relatively normal. From what she had come to understand, Orlesians were not entirely well-liked outside of their own home. A fair amount of the Fereldens she had been around always seemed to have something negative to say about the country. Of course, the amount of what was said was clearly far less within the Inquisition. She was not entirely sure if it was due to the fact that bonds were created through working together or people had simply been taught that they were to keep their mouths shut if they had nothing good to say.

"I wouldn't know," she said flatly, "I'm not Orlesian." It was a fairly obvious fact. Having lived almost her entire life within the Free Marches, Somniari held a distinctly Northern accent. It was the only clear sign that she had ever lived within Kirkwall, as she adopted the common speech patterns found within the city due to her time in the City and alienage as her time with her clan had been too short.

Her brow furrowed at the mention of Rivain and Antiva. She did not know much about the former as her knowledge had been incredibly restricted. Her knowledge about Antiva was about as good as anyone else's. "Well, Antiva is primarily about the Crows." And probably others things, but all others seemed to know about it was the Crows so chances were that its Circles had not been very good.

Finding the last tome, she turned back to Zanthe. "Here you are," she said, "The first is about Justinia I, taking a perspective about her as a warrior. Please do not lose it." She frowned deeply. While the despair was edging away slightly, she found she was not quick to trust the redhead woman. Something about her picked at her nerves and she was not entirely sure it was due to the spirit. "The second is about the Exalted March against Tevinter declared by Beatrix I and the third is about Exalted March declared against the Dales by Renata I. The first two will probably give some form of Tevene history." The notion that it would probably be biased was left unsaid. "The third might provide some use, all things considered."

As if it took a scholar to realize Somniari had no Orlesian touches to her. Not just because of her accent and speech, she dressed like a non-Orlesian. One thing could be said for the Orlesians. They had rather impeccable dressing! Zanthe was Antivan and they had relatively nice style of dressing, beautiful patterns and colorings. She watched as the librarian gathered another few tomes and texts for her studying. Not that she actually wanted to read the damned things…

She needed to tread far more carefully when feeding, especially if she fed again from this one. Somniari turned around to place the tomes in question in the awaiting arms of the Lieutenant. Soft noises were made as the books were transferred. If they were actually heavy remained to be seen, Zanthe didn’t pay it much mind. She nodded as Somniari explained what the items she now possessed were. She would not lose the damned book. The woman could calm down. Zanthe imagined the anger that would be directed at her if she did. And she didn’t feed off anger.

“I will not lose it.” The Antivan promised with a firm nod. “Should I look for you when I have finished the books? You know, to return them. Or should I do something different?” Her knowledge of libraries were very much nonexistent. Both her meat suit and the demon itself had very little idea on proper library etiquette. And any minute longer spent in the presence of her meal meant more despair to devour.

Asking questions on proper policy would be the best way to ensure she could continue to feed in small increments. Later at night she would return in the shape of a rat to feed properly.

The question offered did not strike Somniari as particularly odd. While it was something that anyone in the Circle or even the Chantry might have known, the Inquisition was made up of individuals from all walks of life. While the Lieutenant seemed to know how to read- or, at least, so she could presume unless she was being lied to and her time wasted; she had long ago become distrustful of others in this regard- it was entirely possible that she had never stepped foot near an institution that would allow for public reading.

Had she actually cared about the pasts of those around her a bit more she might have pondered on the notion a bit more. After all, it was rare to meet someone of such origins. Or, so she presumed. People talked about it like it was. The Circle had left her oblivious to where or not it actually was rare. They had liked their mages to be ignorant creatures. She imagined that they might have kept magic from them altogether had they been able to.

"You can," she said, "But you do not need to. Talking to any of the others should do." She would be a bit surprised if the Lieutenant came to her instead of another to return the books.

While obviously demons did not check out books, neither had Zanthe’s possessed body. She truly had no idea on how to go about returning the volumes! And it also gave her a reason to return openly to feast if need be. Though she would not be caught next time. Zanthe never once stepped into a Circle physically. Oh, she’d stepped on their ruins after the war of Mage and Templar began but when they were at their ‘peak’ and still standing, she avoided them. Zanthe could read though she’d never been inside a library prior to this little escapade.

It seemed Somniari found no reason to make an accusation on that front. Good. It was quite honest. She truly didn’t know and any questions she had bought her more time to chip ever slowly at the despair of Somniari. Of course, she’d leave to her quarters once she was done with this interaction to put the books down. Then she’d shift into the blackest shade of rat possible to feast from Somniari in peace. After all, this place was hardly employing cats to chase off the rodents. Another rodent wouldn’t draw suspicion.

“All right,” Zanthe said with a little smile forming. “Thank you! Hopefully it won’t take me too long to read all of this.” She wiggled the pile of books in her grasp with a tiny hint of laughter or at least amusement. “I’ll be sure to return them as they are finished.” She gave a tipping of her head before heading out.

However, she would not be gone long. Her chambers came along quickly as she had a relatively fast walking pace—something her soldiers regularly complained of. She placed the books down, lighting a candle with her magic and setting the mood for an obvious reading session. If someone came along, they’d see that she’d stepped out for a moment before reading. Perhaps for a snack or tea! They wouldn’t be wrong…

Zanthe shifted from her current humanoid form into a rat. She loathed shifting sometimes as she could often feel her bones shifting and readjusting. Pain didn’t quite describe it. More as an acute uncomfortableness. That black rat would scurry along, using premade passageways by other rodents to avoid the residents of Skyhold. The library was her destination. Specifically, Somniari was her destination… And she could feel the pull of such strong overwhelming despair leading her as if it were a leash tugging the demon along.
